Bass Lake, as the leaves start to change and drift to the ground, it seems appropriate for all travel bloggers to shift into “5 Reasons to Travel to (enter location here) in the Fall”. I actually started that very same article. And then I deleted it all. Why? Because it was boring. And basic. And everyone else will write it. They will tell you there are fewer people, cheaper rates, and crisp, cool weather. They will certainly be right. But that’s all a given. I want to share three reasons why coming to the cabin in the Fall might just be my favorite.
The Scent
Do you know what happens when you smell a certain scent? That moment when you smell something and it instantly takes you back. To a feeling. A memory. It could be the scent of the cologne your grandfather used to wear or the smell of your childhood home. It could be the shampoo that was in the hotel on your honeymoon, the smell of your newborn baby, or the sunblock you used on your favorite girlfriend’s weekend. Regardless of what it is, if you let it, it will transport you instantly back and put a smile on your face or a warmth in your heart.
That is what happens to me every time I approach the cabin, especially in the Fall. I’m not sure if the crisp air makes it stronger, but the scent of pine trees, mountains, and earth instantly takes me back to every moment I’ve had and loved there. I close my eyes and breathe it all in deeply. It seems no matter what’s been going on in the rest of my world, that smell washes it all away, and I know I’m headed in the right direction.
Yes, it’s quiet at Bass Lake in the fall. But I’m not talking about the less crowded kind of quiet. I’m talking about the kind where all the noise of life can be left down the hill. The kind where you can be wrapped up in a blanket with some hot chocolate on the deck and hear the dew dripping off the leaves as the sun peeks through. The kind where you can hear the whisper-like footsteps on the fallen leaves of the deer that live above the property. But most importantly, you can hear your thoughts. Or clear them out if you need to. There are no noisy distractions in the quiet of Fall at the cabin. It is truly the perfect time of year to just come sit….and be.
The Calm
I suppose this ties in with the “fewer people” part of traveling in the Fall…that part is certainly true. There is a calm to be found sitting next to the edge of the lake. Not a ripple in the water, but the reflection of the trees soaring above brings a sense of calm every time I sit on the water’s edge. We live in an age of constant motion, a time when it takes effort to unwind and breathe. Bass Lake has been where my family has come for many generations to find refuge in the storms of life. It was in that spirit we built Moosehead Lodge. After the hustle and bustle of summer is gone, Fall ushers in the calm days and nights to reflect, to connect with each other, or even back to ourselves.
There are many great reasons to come to Bass Lake all throughout the year, but Fall truly is my favorite. What’s yours?
